Suppose you were asked to place square carpet on the floor of a square room. You are told that three times the area of the square room is equal to the product of 6m and its perimeter. How much carpeting materials do you need to cover the entire floor?

We need to find the area if the square room so that we can know the area the square carpet to be used.

3 * area of square room = 6 meters * perimeter

Since the area of a square = s^2 and perimeter = 4s

3 * s^2 = 6 * 4s

3 * s^2 = 24s

Divide both sides by 3

(3 * s^2) / 3 = (24s) / 3

s^2 = 8s

Divide both sides by s

(s^2) / s = (8s) / s

s = 8

The sides of the room is 8 meters each.

Area = s^2

Area = 8^2

Area = 64m^2

Therefore the area of the carpet should be 64m^2.
