When you take in, or breathe in, your stomach contracts (fixes) and moves descending. This builds the space in your chest hole, into which your lungs grow. The intercostal muscles between your ribs likewise help grow the chest cavity. They contract to pull your rib confine both upward and outward when you inhale.
